He Oranga Me Te Ohanga – Investing In Kapa Haka

Te Matatini aims to attract new investment in kapa haka from the public and private sector.

The organisation is collecting data and supporting research into kapa haka communities and the economic impact and contribution of Kapa Haka to social, cultural and economic outcomes.

“We plan to build a strong evidence base that highlights kapa haka as an attractive investment,” said Carl Ross, the CEO of Te Matatini. “In 2015, the festival generated $6 million into the Christchurch economy. The previous festival in Rotorua pumped $7.8 million into the region.”

Market research to define the kapa haka market, identify investment opportunities and develop an investment policy is underway.

“We expect market research will tell us for example, what merchandise and promotional products we should pursue as potential revenue streams,” said Mr Ross.
